Employment Service Fair

LIS hosted local organizations for the first annual employment services fair last Thursday. Organizations included CAPI, Project for Pride in Living, Common Bond, and Metro Transit. Students had the chance to speak with representatives about employment opportunities, job training, and housing resources. A big thank you to the organizations that tabled for the fair and we hope to have them return in the near future.

Community Helpers

Michelle Rivero, director of the Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs (OIRA), spoke with students at LIS about this new office. The OIRA is a part of the Department of Neighborhood and Community Relations in Minneapolis and works to ensure that Minneapolis is a safe and welcoming place for all. The  office is in the Department of Neighborhood & Community Relations, and supports the City’s goal to “eliminate disparities so that all Minneapolis can participate and prosper.”
Michelle focused on three topics 1) how the city can respond to the needs of refugees and immigrants 2) resources, mainly legal assistance and how our students can access those resources and 3) informing people who are not immigrants about the issues immigrants and refugees face. A total of 74 students attended the session. Both students and educators were grateful to hear Michelle speak and recognized the importance of this office. We look forward to collaborating further with Michelle and the OIRA.

March Special Events

Learning in Style School will host three events for our students this March. It is a part of our ongoing initiative to introduce students to community organizations that can provide them with help and support.

March 7: Michelle Rivero will inform students about the newly established Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs and the services they provide.

March 21: Employment Services Fair (Career Fair) with Project for Pride in Living and CAPI. Other organizations may be joining as well.

And Coming April 26: Book Fair – our first one!

Habitat For Humanity Representatives Visit Our School

We were pleased to welcome Habitat for Humanity to our school today. Twenty students and a number of our staff attended an hour long session to learn about home ownership and the services Habitat for Humanity provides.

Students learned about the differences in renting  vs. owning a home, how to qualify for a loan and steps to take to purchase a home through Habitat for Humanity.

The presenter was terrific. He made sure everyone could understand what he was saying  through an interpreter that accompanied him.

Learning in Style School continues to reach out to community organizations that can help and support our students. Our thanks to all the members of the Habitat organization, especially today’s presenter and interpreter.

The Polar Vortex Is Behind Us

After being closed for four days last week due to the cold, our students and staff are back to school. There are a number of activities coming up our students can take advantage of. They include:

Thursday, February 7 – Project for Pride in Living will talk to students about employment opportunities.

Friday, February 8 – Open Computer Lab

Monday, February 11 – Habitat for Humanity will talk about their program for students interested in owning a home.

And there is more to come – we are planning a book fair and will be inviting CAPI to talk to students about employment opportunities. Stay tuned for dates!

Warm Heads, Hands and Hearts

A number of our volunteers are making sure the children of our students have hats and mittens for the winter. Mom and dad students can pick up hand knit hats and mittens as they come in to the school.

Minnesota winters are harsh. These hats and mittens keep little heads and hands warm. We are grateful to our warm hearted and very skilled knitters!IMG_5723-1
