Learning in Style School partners with external organizations to help educate students about opportunities available to them. Isuroon has been a terrific partner – here are two programs they recently brought to our students’ attention.
Learning in Style School is honoring all our wonderful volunteers this week with a bulletin board posting, special treats and the coolest socks ever! Our volunteers make a huge difference in the lives of our students. Thank you!
LIS hosted local organizations for the first annual employment services fair last Thursday. Organizations included CAPI, Project for Pride in Living, Common Bond, and Metro Transit. Students had the chance to speak with representatives about employment opportunities, job training, and housing resources. A big thank you to the organizations that tabled for the fair and we hope to have them return in the near future.
Thanks to Cretin Derham Hall students, Learning in Style School had a sock give away this morning for our students.
Derham Cretin students hosted a sock drive and donated over two hundred pairs of socks to our school.
Thank you students!
Summer School begins June 10 and ends July 3. Four classes will be taught: Alphabet Practice, Writing Skills, Conversation with Books and Citizenship. Classes will be in the morning and there will be two sessions – 9:am to 10:30am and 10:30am to 12:pm. We look forward to seeing our students in the summer.
Learning in Style School will host three events for our students this March. It is a part of our ongoing initiative to introduce students to community organizations that can provide them with help and support.
March 7: Michelle Rivero will inform students about the newly established Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs and the services they provide.
March 21: Employment Services Fair (Career Fair) with Project for Pride in Living and CAPI. Other organizations may be joining as well.
And Coming April 26: Book Fair – our first one!
We were pleased to welcome Habitat for Humanity to our school today. Twenty students and a number of our staff attended an hour long session to learn about home ownership and the services Habitat for Humanity provides.
Students learned about the differences in renting vs. owning a home, how to qualify for a loan and steps to take to purchase a home through Habitat for Humanity.
The presenter was terrific. He made sure everyone could understand what he was saying through an interpreter that accompanied him.
Learning in Style School continues to reach out to community organizations that can help and support our students. Our thanks to all the members of the Habitat organization, especially today’s presenter and interpreter.
After being closed for four days last week due to the cold, our students and staff are back to school. There are a number of activities coming up our students can take advantage of. They include:
Thursday, February 7 – Project for Pride in Living will talk to students about employment opportunities.
Friday, February 8 – Open Computer Lab
Monday, February 11 – Habitat for Humanity will talk about their program for students interested in owning a home.
And there is more to come – we are planning a book fair and will be inviting CAPI to talk to students about employment opportunities. Stay tuned for dates!
In 2019, our students will have more opportunities to build their computer skills. The staff of Learning in Style School is offering a series of open computer labs. The first session will be on January 11. Staff will be available to coach and support. We are excited to start the 2019 year of learning!
The children of our students will have new library books in our lending library when parents return to school – a wonderful Christmas present from Blake School parents and students. Thank you and happy new year!
A number of our volunteers are making sure the children of our students have hats and mittens for the winter. Mom and dad students can pick up hand knit hats and mittens as they come in to the school.
Minnesota winters are harsh. These hats and mittens keep little heads and hands warm. We are grateful to our warm hearted and very skilled knitters!
